Are Keypad Garage Door Controls Safe?
May 10, 2016
With all of the new modern technology whizzing around and simplifying our lives, garage doors were bound to get some new upgrades as well. But as with all new innovations, the first thing that comes into question is their safety. Today, we’ll focus on garage door keypads, their most recent safety features, and ways to make them even more safe. This incredibly convenient device is absolutely worth a closer inspection and could end up really coming in handy for most homeowners.
Garage door keypads are simply a numeric pad, or more recently, a fingerprint scanner, that is mounted to your wall somewhere near the garage door. The pad is linked with a receiver on your automatic opener allowing you to open your door from the outside, without the need of a remote or key. They are very convenient when you wish to use your garage door but do not have your keys on you or to let in a guest without a remote.
Rolling Code Technology
Possibly the most important innovation to remote entry security is the implementation of rolling code technology. Without getting overly technical, rolling code is a method by which a new, non-sequential code is generated every time an automatic opener is activated. This alleviates the concern of your code being maliciously captured and reused without your permission. Modern day keypads are not easily “hacked” and, for the most part, it would be easier for trespasser to attempt to physically break into your home than it would be to crack your keypad code!
Biometric-based Keyless Entry
More commonly referred to as a fingerprint scanner, these controls are now showing up on quite a few major garage door opener brands. Both simplifying and adding additional security to your entry system, they also utilize rolling code technology and most can be programmed to remember up to 10 individual fingerprints.
Additional DIY Security
Although your keyless entry is a very safe technology, there are a few basic tips to make sure it stays that way. Mainly, with numeric keypads, extra attention should be paid to the keypad itself. Both changing your code often and keeping your pad clean will ensure there is no uneven wear placed on certain numbers that would hint towards your code. Also, most openers will allow you to program in temporary codes for guests that expire after a certain period of time, saving you from having to give out your actual code to anyone.
So, to address the title question, are keypad garage door controls safe, the answer is simply, yes, they are very safe. Although no home security feature is 100% fail proof, the convenience and modern safety features that these keypads bring are well worth it.
