Winter Maintenance Tips

The one time of year when we really rely on the garage is the winter. No one wants the inconvenience of getting caught out in the cold with a broken garage door, so here are some basic winter maintenance tips to keep your transition from car to home as comfortable as possible.

Cleanliness is Key

After the blustery days and changing of the leaves, your yard and driveway aren't the only part of your home that needs to be swept clear. Garage doors have many nooks and crannies that can harbor dirt, dust, and debris. Be sure to clear tracks and remove any accumulated clutter from near the door. Wipe door down with a grease cutting detergent and warm water, being mindful to pay special attention to joints and weather stripping. Also, pay special attention to the photo eyes. They can be easily wiped down with a clean microfiber cloth and some glass cleaner if necessary. This is a good time to check for any broken parts and pieces or loose bolts.

After a good cleaning, it's the perfect time to lubricate your door. Be sure to find a silicon lubricant as opposed to a greased based type, such as WD-40, since it will do the job without attracting additional dirt and grime.

Fix Any Small Problems

It is always a good idea to familiarize yourself with your garage door’s working parts as often as possible, but it is especially important to make sure everything is where it's supposed to be before the coldest months hit. Tighten loose bolts, make sure the tracks are secure, and check cables and springs.

This is also a good time to check your doors balance. Disengage the automatic opener and open the door about half way. When you let go, the door should remain in place. If it falls down or moves upwards, the balance is off and you should give a pro a call.

It's never a bad time to make sure your doors major safety features are in proper working order. Check the auto reverse and pressure sensor by closing the garage door then quickly (and carefully) sliding a paper towel roll in it's path. Ideally the door should stop and reverse automatically and minimally stop and reverse the second the door touches the roll.
